How to Hang an Outdoor Vinyl Banner So It Lasts (Use Bungees, Not Zip Ties)
Posted by ChurchBanners.com on 4th Nov 2026
An outdoor vinyl banner is one of the best ways to invite your town to Christmas Eve, a fall festival or a new sermon series. How you hang it matters as much as the design. A banner that's hung the right way stays flat, easy to read and ready to use again next year. Here's how to install a vinyl banner so you get the most use out of it.

Our #1 Tip: Use Bungees, Not Zip Ties
Zip ties are cheap and quick, so they're what most people grab. The problem is that a zip tie doesn't give. When the wind catches your banner, all of that pull goes straight to the grommet. Over time the grommets stretch, the vinyl around them tears, or the ties snap. Plastic ties also get brittle in the cold and sun, which is exactly when your Christmas and Easter banners are up.
Ball bungees (the short loops with a plastic ball on the end) stretch a little with each gust and then pull the banner back flat. That small amount of give takes the stress off your grommets, keeps the banner tight and lets you take it down in seconds without cutting anything. You can pick up ball bungees at any hardware store.
What You'll Need
- Your vinyl banner with grommets
- One ball bungee for each grommet (a few extras are handy)
- A tape measure
- A second person to hold the banner level
Our outdoor vinyl banners are printed on 13oz matte vinyl with grommets every 2 feet all the way around, so you have plenty of tie-down points.
How to Hang Your Banner, Step by Step
- Pick your spot. A fence, railing or pair of posts close to the road works best. Make sure nothing like a tree branch or a corner will rub against the banner when it moves.
- Measure first. Check that your space is a few inches wider and taller than the banner so the bungees have room to stretch.
- Start with the top corners. Hook a bungee through each top corner grommet and pull it snug so the top edge is level.
- Do the bottom corners next. Pull them down and out evenly so the banner is flat with no wrinkles.
- Fill in the middle grommets. Work from the center out on each side. Every grommet should have a bungee so no single point carries the load.
- Check the tension. The banner should be snug and flat, but not stretched as tight as a drum. You want the bungees to be able to give a little in the wind.
Don't Have a Fence?
If your best spot is an open lawn by the road, our Fiber Frame vinyl banner hardware gives you a freestanding frame to hang your banner on. It comes in sizes from 3' x 5' up to 4' x 10'.
How to Get More Seasons Out of Your Banner
- Check it after storms. Look for a loose or missing bungee and replace it right away before the other grommets take the extra strain.
- Take it down for severe weather. If high winds are in the forecast, it only takes a few minutes to unhook the bungees and bring the banner inside.
- Clean it gently. Wipe it down with mild soap and water, and let it dry completely before you put it away.
- Roll it, never fold it. Folding leaves creases that won't come out. Roll the banner loosely, printed side out, around a cardboard tube.
- Store it somewhere dry. A closet or storage room keeps it ready for next year.
