Fall Is for Kids: 5 Kids Ministry Fall Events and How to Get Ready

Posted by ChurchBanners.com on 18th Sep 2026

Ask any kids ministry leader and they'll tell you fall is one of the busiest, most fun seasons of the year. Kids move up to a new class, new families show up for the first time, and the calendar fills with parties, service projects and festivals. It's a season full of firsts for kids: a new teacher, a new room, maybe their very first Bible.

Here are the fall events kids look forward to most, plus simple ways to make each one feel bright, welcoming and easy for families to find their way around.

1. Fall Kickoff and Promotion Sunday

For kids, moving up a grade at church is a big deal. Many churches mark it with a Promotion Sunday or a fall kickoff party: games and treats, a meet-your-teacher time, and a first look at the new classroom. It's also the Sunday many families visit for the first time, so clear directions matter.

How we can help:

  • Kids retractable banners help families find check-in. The stand comes with a 33" x 77" fabric banner insert on a silver aluminum base. Arrows can point any direction, and colors can be matched to your ministry.
  • Kids check-in and welcome banners mark each classroom and age group so parents know exactly where to drop off and pick up.
  • Kids ministry t-shirts make your volunteers easy to spot on a busy morning. Sizes run Small through 3X-Large, and you can add your ministry logo.

2. Bible Sunday and Fall Family Worship Nights

Fall is a natural time to hand out Bibles to a new class of kids, host a "Bible Bash" with Bible-drill games, or invite families to a kid-friendly worship night. These nights are all about celebrating what kids are learning.

How we can help:

3. Fall Festivals and Trunk or Treat

This is the big one for most kids. Costumes, candy, hayrides, bounce houses, face painting and carnival games make a fall festival or trunk or treat one of the best-attended events of the year. Halloween falls on a Saturday in 2026, so many churches are planning theirs for October 24 or 31. (Need theme ideas? See our post on trunk or treat ideas for church.)

How we can help:

  • Trunk or treat and fall festival banners tell your whole neighborhood when to come. They're printed on 13 oz matte vinyl with grommets every 2 ft, single or double sided.
  • Fall feather flags at the driveway help families spot where to turn in.
  • A photo backdrop with your church's name on it makes a fun photo booth for costumes. Our kids backdrops come in 8' x 8' or 8' x 10' on soft polyester fabric, with a stand available as an option.

4. Parents' Night Out

A fall-themed Parents' Night Out, like "Pumpkins and PJs," gives parents a free evening while kids enjoy a movie, crafts and snacks with volunteers they already know. Kids love it, and it's a great way to serve young families in your community.

How we can help:

  • Kids handheld signs make drop-off feel like a party. Volunteers can greet cars and families at the door with "Kids Church," "You Belong Here" or "Show Us Your Smile." They're printed on lightweight 3mm Sintra board in 18" x 18" or 23" x 23".
  • A retractable banner at the door shows families exactly where to check in and pick up.

5. Service Projects: Kids Helping Others

Fall and Thanksgiving are a wonderful time to teach kids to serve. Popular projects include packing Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes before National Collection Week in the third week of November, "reverse trick or treating" to collect canned food for a local pantry, writing thank-you cards to church staff and first responders, and making care packages for neighbors.

How we can help:

  • A custom kids ministry banner can track your class's goal, like "100 Shoeboxes" or "500 Cans," so kids can see what they're working toward.
  • Handheld signs let kids cheer on donors at a drive-through food drive.
